About this deal

The new one has the same contacts into the existing terminals on the backplate - there is also a new backplate provided if you need one, but my old one looked fine so I simply pulled out the battery protection tab, snapped the new programmer back onto the old backplate, switched it on and started programming it according to the instructions. It also has a backlit display which is great to see in a dark airing cupboard and the backup battery is a readily available CR2032 instead of the previous specialist or soldered in ones. You can select 2 or 3 on/off cycles per day, weekday/ weekend, heating and or hot water on, or individual days can all be selected.

When setting the on/off times, the screen shows all 5 weekdays at the top of the screen, so cant copy from one day to the next.

Would have thought that after use they would go out until a button was pressed to turn them on when needed. I do not have any of these, but the manual mentions EP2000, EP2002, EP3002 and EP6002 so I guess all of those are just as easy to replace with the EP2. One note however, the EP2 face plate has a tiny screw on the lower edge that is screwed in from the underside to really lock the faceplate in position. Both of these views turned out to be misleading, probably only true of you don't take the time to set it up for your needs, as per installer guide. Not sure what the problem is but wondered if it's reasonable to think that it's a fault with the programmer so, if I'm going to change it, then to opt for the EP2?

Fully Pumped or Gravity System if just swapping front plate EP2001 for EP2 is it gravity system setting you put just standard oil boiler. Excellent plug and play' replacement for my defunct EP2001, and a number of other Potterton Controllers. The EP2 is a digital programmer that allows you to control the timing and temperature settings for your heating and hot water. This EP2 can be programmed to clone the actions of its predecessors the EP2000 EP2002 EP3002 and EP6002 as well as being fully programmable in its own right. The new, simpler A-G energy rating scale is stricter and designed so that very few products are initially expected to achieve the top “A” rating. If its set lower than the room temp actually is, then the boiler will not come on, or if its one like we had, it may need new batteries. Strictly I should have released it by pushing a screwdriver into the rectangular slot at the bottom right of the case first, but didn't see it at the time. A couple of the holes where the tommy-bar fits had burrs but these were easily removed using a round file.

The only thing I found was that the back of the EP2 sticks out more than its predecessors and where I had wiring crossing the central vertical support of the backplate, I could not fully close the programmer onto the backplate. I have been using a Potterton EP6000 programmer for some 21 years for my CH system and replaced the 48volt relays when they slowly burnt out over the years, but now the membrane hardly works when pressing the buttons so purchased a new Potterton EP2. Probably a simple press of the button to get days but nothing as obvious in the brief instructions compared with the EP6000 leaflet which went through the whole routine step by step. I also have a spare backplate with just a mains connection on it and the locking part of the catch filed off so that I can set the programmer up on the table as it is too awkward to work in the airing cupboard and of course the memory battery holds the settings. Praise the Lord, I had visions of having no hot water and a grumpy wife nagging me to get a whole new boiler for days.As others have said, it’s an easy replacement for an existing Potterton programmer with no wiring or plumbing to worry about, providing your existing backplate is undamaged, which it most likely will be. Instructions good, but you also need to use the supplied installer instructions to get it working right for you. Gone through the instruction sheet but it is not clear when or how to access just the individual days. What is amazing is that the old EP6000 kept the LED's on 24/7 slowly burning them out after the years had gone by and yet after some 21 years later they still have them on blasting out a blue light all over the room at night.
