About this deal

Like all the best conversations, the one between Jameson’s Head of Whiskey Science and the Head Brewer of a local craft beer brewery, started at the bar. From there, the spirit is combined with some generic mass produced neutral grain spirits (hence the “blended whiskey” title) that may or may not be produced by the same company. Whereas Jameson Original is light, floral, and a little fruity, Caskmates Stout Edition is caramel-y and creamy. Where our Triple distilled whiskey is finished in beer seasoned casks from our friends at Eight Degrees Brewing. While we have taken care in preparing this summary and believe it is accurate, it is not a substitute for your reading the product packaging and label prior to use.

The grains are dried using natural gas kilns (unlike the peat fired kilns used in Scotland), fermented, and then distilled three times in batches within their small pot stills. The original Bow Street distillery was renovated in 2016 and now serves as a tourist attraction designed to increase interest in Irish whiskey tastings. When a local craft brewer borrowed our casks to age their fine Irish stout it gave us an idea: why not finish our own precious whiskey in the stout beer seasoned oak barrels?This particular bottle is wrapped in a darker black background label (as opposed to the bright yellowed version on the standard edition) that bears the name and arms of Jameson. A few years later, in 1805, John Jameson bought out the Stein family and became the sole proprietor of the distillery. Last week I was appalled to find that Ballantine's 17 year old has been utterly ruined, now resembling Red Label more than the original, scrumptious dram.

But we’ve a good answer, Jameson IPA (Irish Pale Ale) – created for the craft beer lovers and the curious whiskey enjoyers. Which makes a collaboration between Jameson and a local craft stout beer distillery a no brainer, and the Jameson Caskmates Stout edition is the result.After that, the casks made their way back to the distillery, were they were used to finish this enjoyable Irish whiskey. An initial aroma of freshly cut hay is complemented by a crisp orchard fruit character – green apples and pears, with a twist of lime zest.

As with the Stout Edition, Jameson sent its used whiskey casks over the Franciscan Well brewery, where they were used to aged some IPA beer. All reviews are evaluated within the context of their specific spirit classification as specified above. French company Pernod Ricard later purchased the Irish Distiller’s Group in 1988, and continue to own the Middleton distillery and produce Jameson Irish whiskey from there to this day. The trademark smoothness of Jameson Original, with additional rich flavours of coffee and cocoa from the beer cask finish. It's the reason John Jameson first triple distilled Irish whiskey, creating Jameson Irish Whiskey as we know it.Patrick's Day 2015, and we know that some of the fine folk at Irish Distillers were worried that it may be seen as a bit of a gimmick. Coming off the glass, I can smell not only the honey and vanilla, but also some of the bitter hops from the beer coming through and adding a bit of spicy depth. Enjoy this chilled collection inspired by the best Jameson cocktails, whatever the occasion, wherever you are.Perhaps to an extent it is, but more importantly, it works - a worthwhile experiment that's produced a unique and interesting Irish whiskey. In this case, the stout beer flavors remained strong and present despite the addition of a bit of ice and water.
