About this deal

Didn't really have much to do with unicorns, but I'm sure it will check out a bunch with my library patrons nonetheless. This entertaining picture book about friendship, collaboration and determination is a delight to share with young children. I'll be honest, I was hoping for a much grumpier unicorn (probably because I identify as grumpy), but overall this was a fun story with colorful illustrations and characters that are sure to entertain the intended audience.

Sarah McIntyre and Philip Reeve - Nottingham

I didn’t have an idea right then, so I just started poking a story into my phone, about someone who didn’t have an idea for a story. Narwhal pictures himself as a brave knight, Mermaid imagines battling with fearsome monsters, while Jellyfish fancies herself as a space explorer. I spend quite some time finding all the little details in the illustrations and soak up all the gorgeous colours. On Monday 19 December, Kate reads Grumpycorn, written and illustrated by Sarah McIntyre, a story celebrating teamwork, friendship and the joys of storytelling. She reads The Black Book of Colours written by Menena Cottin and illustrated by Rosana Faria about experiencing a rainbow of colours through our senses of touch, taste, smell or hearing. Many of you will know what it’s like when you are making or organising something, and then other people come along and don’t do things exactly the way you’d want them to. I loved that while this book is about a unicorn gone grumpy it is also about his friends and that each friend got a bit of the spotlight. Celebrate all things Grumpycorn with this brand new interview with superstar author and illustrator Sarah McIntyre! Unicorn grumpily sends the sea creatures away, claiming they are interrupting his creative thought process.

All I want to do is go back to that story or drawing and everything else feels like an annoying distraction! Otherwise it was just sit on a shelf in Scholastic looking beautiful, but all alone and unread, and that would be sad. delightful and fun, and now I'm dying to know what moonberry tea and mermaid-baked cookies are like.On Thursday 22 December, Anthony reads the classic children’s book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats about a little boy named Peter who puts on his snowsuit and steps out of his house into a world blanketed in snow. I was so happy when I learned that Sarah McIntyre would be having a brand-new picture book, this time about a unicorn, no, a grumpycorn! And I also get help from people at Scholastic - Louisa Danquah, Bethan Dewey, Harriet Dunlea and others - who help spread the word about the book, so people know it’s out there! When I do book events, I run around in big floofy frocks and mad hats and people don’t always take me very seriously.

She loves creating books and comics with friends and getting inspired by batting around ideas and drawings with them.Sporting superstar Anthony Joshua is also appearing on the much-loved children’s show in the run up to Christmas. The first Grumpycorn book came about when I had a picture book due as soon as I got back from holiday!

I get grumpy when I’m right in the middle of a terrific story (whether it be reading a book or watching a film), or making a drawing that I like, and I have to go do something else. Even though I wrote and illustrated the book myself, I relied very much on my editor, Pauliina Malinen, to help with the words, and my designer, Strawberrie Donnelly, to help with the pictures and overall design of the book. I have a great appreciation of Sarah McIntyre and her work, and the images found here are no exception. His beloved friends, Narwhal, Mermaid, and Jellyfish, to try to help inspire him but still nothing seems to work. That journalist deleted what he’d written, and wrote much better things when the campaign really started making a difference in the publishing industry. Vibrant illustrations, which are full of humorous detail, burst from every page to bring the funny, warm-hearted tale to life. Sarah is immensely proud of Britain's amazing illustrators and how well their pictures tell stories.
