About this deal

Of course it isn't a witch, it's a woman whose given up on society and gotten sick of hiding from authorities and changing her identity. He longs for a friend, but knows the only way he and his mother can stay where they are is to keep themselves to themselves. normally i get so bored with flashbacks (especially in books where the protagonist has either time travelled or lived through history) as they're hard to read and the writing style often differs from the rest of the book. I particularly liked Roxy who was the definition of what we all aspire to be: funny, smart, kind ,talented ect. You spend twenty five of them growing up and learning who you are, then you spend twenty five of them nurturing, encouraging and caring for your children.

First published in Great Britain by HarperCollins

He may seem like an ordinary eleven-year-old boy, but he's actually more than a thousand years old--and remembers the last Viking invasion of England, not to mention the French Revolution and both World Wars. Bringing the concept of living a long life into a tween book is not always easy, but The 1000 Year Old Boy makes it close to home. Who then grew up becoming a man and leaving Alfie trapped in his kid's body that had aroused suspicion among the people. But, say after a 100 years, when I will find that I have no family and friends left and am just living on, how would that feel? There's slightly hard on his luck Aiden whose dad is out of work and who seems to be losing his only friends at school.Gradually—too gradually, as the author strings out hundreds of pages of Hogwarts-style pranks, classroom mishaps and competitions both academic and romantic—it becomes clear that the placement wasn’t a mistake at all. Once I started reading it was difficult to stop - all the characters were amazing and so likeable (especially biffa). After years of facing humiliation and rejection, Alfie has become secluded and avoids human company.

Rich and strange (and kitted out with an eye-catching cover), but stronger in the set pieces than the internal logic.

In the book, Alfie wanted to find life pearls right after when his mother passed away, which I can say that it was the only hope for him- to start growing again. A truly original read, the plot’s twists and turns are anchored by the warmth, courage and humour of its varied characters. This story is told from the alternating perspectives of Alfie and Aidan; it is a heart-warming, fast-paced adventure with a fascinating intermingling of history and modern life. Ross has secured his hat-trick with a third thunderbolt of a book exploring a question many will have thought at one point or another. While it is true that we can argue for The 1,000-Year-Old Boyas a historical fiction due to its heavy use of time-jumps and flashbacks, which sometimes take up entire chapters, I feel that this does not signify the novel’s genre so much as the way in which history plays a significant role in characterisation and storytelling.

The book also has that adventurous feel to it – especially towards the end as it hurtles towards a nerve-wrecking climax. Better yet, in Boz she has created a scene-stealing force of nature, a free spirit who’s never happier than when he’s stirring up mischief. Not only did it turn the pages itself and excite you no end , but this book carried a different moving , different message which made me reconsider the idea of living forever and cry! At this point, readers are likely to feel suddenly left behind, as, thanks to summary deus ex machina resolutions, everything turns out swell(ish). This is the story of Alfie Monk – an ageless (not immortal) young boy who deals with the gift/curse of living forever.

It all made the book the hardest one I have written; it is also, however – in my opinion – the best. Set around Newcastle and featuring cameos from Charles Dickens and Bede, Welford’s historical and geographical touches provide an unusual setting for the timeless themes of family, friendship and growing up.

Although I believe that children should not be completely shielded from some of the tragic realities of life (Alfie’s mother is killed and for a time he believes his cat was also), I also think it’s important for the 9-12 age group that there is positive resolution and that good things can come out of bad. If you're lucky you'll see your grandchildren enter this world and have some time to reflect on your life and do a few the things you always told yourself you'd do but life got in the way. A very well conceived and played middle-grade read that treats its children readers like adults in this fascinating look at immortality and its cons as well as its pros. It interested me because there were a lot of things that remained unknown until something big happened. While most fantasy novels use fantastical elements to accentuate the novel’s own uniqueness — to wow and hook readers, propelling them into escapist comfort — Welford effectively subverts that notion by presenting the life-pearl, one of the few fantastical elements in the novel, as the central source of distress for the protagonist.
