About this deal

My adoration was more than just the heart-warming nature of the stories: The series is set in England, and I’m British. The characters of Sister Julienne, Cynthia, Chummy, Sister Evangelina, and Sister Monica Joan (among others) are introduced early and quickly claim a place in your heart—cast so exquisitely, and very true to what Worth’s daughters remember. of our deliveries are made by Royal Mail as we think they give the best service and cover all areas of the UK. In an unimaginable twist, Florence Nightingale avails of the ear of Her Majesty Queen Victoria to help free Sister Monica Joan. Through the two Great Wars, people learnt never to plan ahead and constantly reduce their needs according to circumstances, but what no one planned for or anticipated was the insuperable attitude of the British.

On a parting note, I have the real names of the characters that loomed large in the television series and those that inspired characters not explicitly featured in the books but feature in the series. The book not only details the final years of the tenements but also of Jennifer's journey as she moves on from the close community of nuns, and her life takes a new path. However, the series took on a life of its own and grew far beyond the original characters into ten episodes with eleven being in the offing and eight, hour long episodes each. I will never forget the stories about those poor people and what a terrible life of drudgery they had to endure. It s a very nice and rare fiction about the intimate life of (poor) women in the 50ies to 60ies in London. After accompanying the abrupt and seemingly humorless nun on her rounds, Worth discovers that the sister is a war heroine who is beloved by her patients for her scatological tales and ability to emit a fart of Chaucerian proportions. Peggy and Frank's parents both died within 6 months of each other and the children were left destitute. Shadows of the Workhouse’ (2005; reissued 2008) and ‘Farewell to the East End’ (2009) also became bestsellers. Containing previously unpublished material describing her time spent in Paris and some journal entries, this is also a portrait of Jennifer herself, complete with a moving introduction by her family about the woman they knew and loved.

On 4 March 2019, the BBC announced it had commissioned two further series and Christmas specials, through to an eleventh series in 2022, moving the plot into the late-sixties. I’ll admit to being thrown just a bit starting the audiobook, wherein there was a prologue not introduced to the first BBC series episode. This was almost 2 million above the slot average, and by some distance the most popular UK drama in every week of transmission. The starring actor is English actress Jessica Raine wherein she appears as Jennifer Lee, notably in the first three series. In 2012, the popular BBC adaptation of the trilogy boosted sales further, and all four of the author's books about the East End (the "Midwife trilogy" and In the Midst of Life) went back into the charts. The former special forces officer is heading to Europe, to go face to face with some of Putin's most killer henchmen! One of course knew of the reputation of the rougher parts of the docklands and stayed clear, one also knew of the rich history of those parts – after all, it was all in the name, wasn’t it: East India docks for East India company? Don't get me wrong, they are still good but just quite so good as the first but definitely well worth a read!

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. If one has had the privilege of having grown up in this indomitable country, one knows the unconquerable attitude of which I speak. Worth wrote the first volume of her memoirs by hand and sent them to Coates to read, and Coates later served as advisor on the books and the TV adaptation. The book has over twenty five editions and the first one was initially published in 2005; just like its precursor, this book is also classified as historical, nonfiction, biography memoir, and autobiography memoir. As always there are heartbreaking stories such as the family devastated by tuberculosis and a ship's woman who 'serviced' the entire crew, as well as plenty of humour and warmth, such as the tale of two women who shared the same husband! We work closely with publishers and authors to ensure that we offer the best books on the market for your child.

The Great White Plague ravaged Europe in volcanic proportions during the 1800s and the 1900s, and yet when Benjamin Marten suggested the concepts of germs and contagion in 1722, he was ridiculed. The series and the books, however, transported me to a different time where I could see the landscape changing before my own eyes. According to the World Health Organisation, nurses and midwives account for nearly 50 per cent of the global health force so if you know someone who practices as a midwife or if you yourself were supported during childbirth, make sure to share a heartfelt thank you for all the work they do. She started working as a nurse in 1950 and left nursing in 1973, in a bid to follow her musical ambitions. She also earned the confidences of some whose lives were truly stranger, more poignant and more terrifying than could ever be recounted in fiction. We celebrate the International Day of the Midwife 2021 (5 May) at Yours, learning more about the profession, its history and giving thanks to the wonderful midwives who have played a huge role in home-birthing.
